Lower School

A walk through the Lower School speaks volumes:stimulating classwork, enthusiastic teachers, rooms brimming with manipulatives, walls covered with student work, learning groups huddled together over a project, an enthusiastic “wow” coming from a student making a computer discovery.

These first steps that students take in Lower School give them the skills and sense of self and community to be successful when they move on to Middle School. Girls and boys who attend SMA, both boys through grade 8 and girls through grade 12, take their SMA preparation with them to college and beyond.

Each day kids love to learn, whether it’s kindergartners counting in Spanish or 4/5 students building machines in science. Students like school and spend their days being stretched and challenged in core subjects as well as in religion and values, visual and performing arts, physical education, and Spanish. Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum.

Flexibility and attention to each child’s needs mean students are grouped in a variety of ways throughout the day.

Lower School is a special place for students — participating in weekly assemblies, praying with classmates every morning, playing a musical instrument for the first time, teaming up for intramural games, bringing mittens for needy children, talking with the counselor when times are tough, being a valued member of SMA’s Blue Ribbon community.
