Creativity, imagination and excellence are at the heart of education at St. Mary’s Academy. Each day students engage in activities that emphasize technique, risk taking, and aesthetic awareness through the exploration of music, theater, and visual arts.
All Lower School students experience music, drama, and art classes as a regular part of their school day. They may also choose enrichment through participation in band, choir, orchestra, drama club, and private music lessons.
Middle School students have several performance and non-performance arts classes to choose from, including visual arts, drama, band, choir, orchestra, handbells, guitars, recorders, and music appreciation.
In the High School, students are encouraged to continue exploring the arts in introductory level visual and performing arts classes or to focus their interests and talents in advanced courses of study. The curriculum includes beginning and advanced levels of two-dimensional and three-dimensional art and photograph, drama and musical theater, choir, orchestra and handbells. St. Mary’s Academy also offers a course in Theory of Aesthetics and advanced placement art history and studio art.
The Coyle Gallery displays art shows of student work, teacher-artists, and well-know artists in the Denver community. Choirs, orchestras, and bands perform seasonal concerts.
In addition to drama classes taught during the daily curriculum, an after-school theater program produces two shows each year, including an all-Academy musical in alternating years.
Participation in the arts at SMA helps students problem solve, think imaginatively, and celebrate divergent but equally successful solutions to any given challenge. These are all traits that serve students well in a variety of academic disciplines and in their future as adults in a global society.
Although we expected the exceptional academic excellence that our children are getting at SMA, what amazed us is how each teacher truly cares and knows our children. There is also an array of extra-curricular activities available to them. SMA educates them academically and creatively.
