HS Environmental Club Strives to Keep SMA Green
The High School Environmental Club conducted a waste audit in order to analyze the waste and recycling habits of the SMA High School. The club collected all of the garbage from the High School after one day, sifted through the contents and weighed the trash.
The club’s findings were shocking. They found that every day the High School throws away 150 lbs. of garbage, which is 27,000 lbs. a year. Thirteen percent of the garbage could have been recycled.
The Environmental Club hopes that the information from the waste audit will make SMA students more aware of recycling. To help, the club has made signs that will be put up above recycling bins that show students what can and cannot be recycled.
The club has also asked students to sign up for one thing they can do to help the environment (DOT), whether that be using a recyclable water bottle or buying from local producers.
The club chronicled the process of their waste audit in a video.
