Fifth Annual Habitat for Humanity Trip to New Orleans

High School students traveled to New Orleans where they spent their spring break building a house with Habitat for Humanity.  Four teachers and twenty-four eleventh and twelfth grade students spent a week framing interior and exterior walls, raising the walls and sheathing the outside of the house.

One eleventh grade student said "It was a great experience to see the house develop from a foundation to having walls, especially after seeing the destruction both the hurricane and the levee breaking caused the city.  I learned that no matter who you are, you can make a life-changing impact in someone else's life and truly make a difference in the world."

This is the fifth year that SMA students have traveled to New Orleans to help the community rebuild after the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. A senior said, “The most meaningful part of the trip for me was seeing the lower ninth ward neighborhood. You cannot fully appreciate the work you are doing until you see the destruction which still exists.“
