Origami Cranes a Wish for Japan’s Recovery

The High School’s Asian Cultural Awareness Club is raising money this week for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan by creating and selling 1,000 origami cranes, selling Japanese snacks and conducting a crane-making class during lunch on Friday.
The goal of 1,000 cranes is reminiscent of the true story of Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who developed leukemia after the bombing of Hiroshima and hoped to make 1,000 cranes. She drew inspiration from the Japanese belief that anyone who made 1,000 cranes would be granted a wish by the crane.
The garlands of cranes will be displayed in the high school with the money raised being sent to the American Red Cross.
Soon after the earthquake/tsunami, the Current World Issues class created a large chalk drawing of the Japanese flag on the sidewalk near the parking lot to remember and support the people of Japan.
