SMA Alumna Featured in “5280”: The Inside Story of a First-Year DPS Teacher
We’re so proud that SMA alumna Millie Barsallo ’05 is featured in an article, “The Inside Story of a First-year DPS Teacher,” in the September issue of "5280" magazine. It chronicles her first year at Cole Arts & Science Academy teaching third and fourth graders in the English Language Acquisition-Spanish program.
After graduating from SMA, Millie graduated from Cornell University’s Department of Government in 2009, expecting to go on to law school and then a career on Capitol Hill. However, she was intrigued by an email from Teach for America (a program similar to Peace Corps) hoping to recruit high achieving college graduates to teach in poor schools across the country. Milllie applied and was accepted and offered the job at Cole.
The article offers insights into a first year teacher’s experiences in and the challenges she and her students faced that year, 2009-2010.
