SMA Students Participate in United Nations Conference
Eight St. Mary's Academy juniors and two teachers recently traveled to New York to participate in the United Nations Conference on the Status of Women (CSW). This annual conference invites ambassadors and Non-Governmental Organization representatives to report on issues related to women and girls around the world.
The students who participated in the conference came back to SMA and shared what they learned from their experience with the school community.
Student Amanda said, “Being a part of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women and Girls was an experience I will carry with me for the rest of my life. It opened my eyes to the progress we, as women and girls, have made by taking a stand against the injustices in which we have been faced with.”
Student Callan commented, “The speakers at the CSW inspired me because they each saw a problem in the world that they wanted to fix. Instead of waiting for a change, they set their minds to creating the change. They continue to work and inspire people such as myself to do the same.”
This is the second year that SMA students have attended the conference as a result of the invitation given by the Sisters of Loretto UN NGO representative Sally Dunne.
As seen in the picture below, students also had the opportunity to meet the Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, Melanne Verveer.
