Summer Workshops: Gearing up for 2011-2012

summer faculty workshopIt’s vacation, but many SMA teachers were on campus this week honing skills in workshops on Differentiated Instruction and on technology.

Nationally-recognized expert Dr. Debbie Silver returned to SMA for a second time to work with teachers on strategies to meet the learning needs of all students through Differentiated Instruction.  With teachers already using skills acquired during in-service day last fall, this week ‘s workshop built on that experience and  the learning that had taken place on Late Start days when faculty read, discussed and applied knowledge from Integrated Differentiated Instruction and Understanding by Design by Carol Tomlinson and Jay McTighe.

In the area of technology, SMA teachers Tanya Komandt and Judy Johnson taught half-day workshops on MacTips n Tricks and Web 2.0 Tools and workshops on Cell Phones in the Classroom and ActiveExpressions, ActivVotes and ActivInspire  for the ActivBoards.  Three High School students from the Mouse Mischief Tech Club served as assistants in the workshops and also taught several of the Web 2.0 sessions.

Between 25 and 30 teachers attended each session for a total of over 100 participants, with many teachers attending all four.  SMA teachers are already gearing up for a great 2011-2012 year!
