Three Teams Participate in Regional Mock Trials
Congratulations to the 35 High School students who participated on three mock trial teams at the regional competition at the Arapahoe County Courthouse on February 25-26. Each team scored well in the four trials, with the students rotating the roles of defense and prosecution attorneys and witnesses for each side. The regional trials were presided over by a Colorado judge with attorneys, paralegals and other community members judging the student performances.
The SMA participants were ninth graders through seniors. Don Nelson, the school sponsor, commented, “I was impressed with the students during the trial proceedings. The many hours spread over several months came together with the students presenting themselves with the utmost quality and professionalism.”
The team coaches were SMA parents who are also practicing attorneys. “The coaches were generous in sharing their time, knowledge and skill with the students,” said Mr. Nelson. “I know from experience that what the students have learned will enhance their lives in the years ahead.”
The Colorado Bar Association sponsors the CBA High School Mock Trial Program along with many other educational programs in the state.
